Hazardous Disposal

The Fire Department is frequently asked by residents about the disposal of household hazardous waste materials. This comes under the auspices of the Town's Municipal Recycling Facility. They can be reached at 631-324-7191.

Each year the Town of East Hampton holds a household hazardous waste event called a STOP Day (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants).  This is the only time during the year you can bring hazardous household waste other than  automotive waste oil to the Town recycling facilities.

Hazardous waste accepted included:

  • Aerosols
  • Ammunition
  • Antifreeze
  • Automotive waste oil          ACCEPTED YEAR ROUND
  • Batteries (other than re-chargeable batteries)   ACCEPTED YEAR ROUND
  • Caustics / Cleaning agents
  • Electronics (computers, televisions, cell phones)         ACCEPTED YEAR ROUND
  • Mercury-containing wastes (thermometers, switches, fluorescent lighting, etc)
  • Paints and solvents
  • Pesticides (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc.)
  • Propane cylinders must be disposed of through the use of an authorized flammable gas dealer and are not accepted by the Town (unless the entire valve assembly is removed).
  • Radioactive waste (some home smoke detectors are classified as radioactive waste because they contain very small amounts of a radioactive isotope of americium).
  • Refrigerant-containing appliances           ACCEPTED YEAR ROUND

All other times hazardous waste can only be disposed of at private facilities. Please check the internet or your phone book for possible vendors.

Please call the Town's Municipal Recycling Facility for the most currant information at 631-324-7191.
